Universal Accessibility in India: Building Spaces That Include Everyone

People & Purpose Foundation is a non-profit organization registered in 2026 under the Section 8 Companies Act, 2013 in India.
The foundation was established by two professional social workers from the Delhi School of Social Work — Jalaj Nagar and Lipika Khatana — whose personal and professional journeys shaped a shared vision for social change.
Jalaj sustained a spinal cord injury in a road accident at a very young age. His lived experience, combined with his professional training in social work, led him to a critical realization: many spinal cord injuries are preventable. Unsafe road behaviour, lack of awareness, and improper response during emergencies often turn accidents into lifelong conditions. This realization shaped the foundation’s commitment to prevention, awareness, and advocacy.
During his recovery and rehabilitation journey, he also witnessed significant gaps in injury prevention education, emergency response systems, accessibility infrastructure, and societal attitudes toward persons with disabilities. These experiences became the foundation of his commitment to building a culture of road safety, prevention, accessibility, and inclusion in India.
Lipika brings both lived insight and professional expertise to our mission. Through her journey, she recognized a powerful truth — people are already carrying emotional and practical stress in their personal lives. When workplaces add unmanaged pressure, it deeply impacts mental health, well-being, and productivity.
Her work is rooted in transforming workplace culture. She focuses on strengthening mental health systems and embedding Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) into institutional structures — helping workplaces become respectful, supportive, inclusive, and psychologically safe spaces. She believes that workplaces shouldn’t just function — they should care.
Together, they recognized that prevention, disability inclusion, accessibility, and mental well-being are deeply interconnected. People & Purpose Foundation was created to address these issues holistically — through awareness, advocacy, education, and systemic change.
We believe that safety, dignity, accessibility, and mental well-being are not privileges. They are essential foundations of a just and inclusive society.
Our mission is to create safer, more inclusive, and accessible communities through awareness, advocacy, and collaborative action. We aim to:
A society where spinal cord injuries are significantly reduced, roads are safer, workplaces are inclusive and mentally healthy, public spaces are accessible, and persons with disabilities live with dignity, independence, equal opportunities, and full participation in mainstream society.
Our work is guided by five core pillars, each focused on creating meaningful and lasting impact:
Prevention lies at the core of our mission. We conduct awareness sessions on spinal cord injury prevention and road safety across schools, colleges, and workplaces, empowering individuals with knowledge to reduce risks and promote safer practices.
We strive to foster a strong road safety culture through education, behaviour change initiatives, and first-response training. Our programs engage young people in schools, colleges, and workplaces, while also reaching parents and communities through RWAs and local outreach efforts.
Inclusion must go beyond awareness and translate into institutional reform. We work to embed Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) into policies, leadership practices, workplace cultures, and community systems. Our focus is on structural transformation — ensuring that accessibility, disability sensitization, and equal participation are integrated into the core functioning of organizations and society.
Accessibility is fundamental to independence, dignity, and full participation. We believe that disability is not the barrier—rather, it is inaccessible systems and environments that limit inclusion. Our mission is to advance universal accessibility, enabling persons with disabilities to navigate spaces independently and with confidence. Through accessibility audits and advocacy, we work to transform accessibility from an afterthought into a core principle of infrastructure and development planning.
We recognize that unmanaged stress and exclusion impact both individual well-being and organizational effectiveness. Our work focuses on fostering mentally healthy workplace cultures by promoting stress management, leadership accountability, and inclusive practices. We advocate for environments where psychological safety, belonging, and holistic well-being are prioritized—ensuring that workplaces not only drive productivity but also support people to thrive.
We are a pan-India organization dedicated to serving communities across the country
Founded by Jalaj Nagar and Lipika Khatana, graduates of the Delhi School of Social Work, the organization is rooted in both lived experience and professional insight. Jalaj’s journey following a spinal cord injury shaped a strong commitment to prevention, road safety, accessibility, and disability inclusion. Lipika brings a focus on mental well-being and inclusive workplace cultures, emphasizing the need for supportive and psychologically safe environments. Together, they work to advance a holistic vision of safety, dignity, accessibility, and mental well-being for all.

“Sometimes the purpose of our life begins with a challenge we never expected.”
For Jalaj Nagar, the founder of People & Purpose Foundation, the journey started with a life changing moment. As a student in Class 10, a road accident resulted in a spinal cord injury that suddenly changed the direction of his life. The years that followed were filled with medical treatment, continuous rehabilitation, and emotional struggles. For nearly six years life revolved around recovery, and there were times when he felt that he had lost hope.
With time, that difficult phase slowly turned into determination. One day Jalaj decided that he wanted to continue his studies and rebuild his life with a new sense of purpose. As he moved forward with his education and later pursued professional social work at the Delhi School of Social Work, University of Delhi, he began to notice something important.
Many people believed that his condition was from birth. Very few people actually understood what a spinal cord injury is, how it occurs, or the serious complications it can bring. This lack of awareness made him realize that society knows very little about such injuries, even though many of them can be prevented.
This realization gave birth to a purpose. Jalaj felt a strong need to create awareness, especially among young people, so that others do not face the same life changing consequences because of lack of information and awareness.
This thought eventually led to the creation of People & Purpose Foundation. Through the foundation, Jalaj works to spread awareness about spinal cord injury prevention, encourage responsible road behaviour, and educate communities about how informed decisions and timely action can prevent serious injuries.
At the same time, he is deeply committed to promoting accessibility and inclusion so that persons with disabilities come into the mainstream of society and never feel that they are less than anyone else
We work to prevent spinal cord injuries, promote road safety, and build accessible, inclusive environments where every person can live with dignity and equal opportunity.
